National Center for the Study of Manuscripts

T_CNSMlogoThe National Center for the Study of manuscript was created in the National Central Library of Rome at the end of 1989 with the aim to collect in one place all the microfilms of the manuscripts of Italian libraries.

The Center was created through a massive microfilming campaign launched by the Central Office for the Book Heritages, which has involved public state libraries that depend from Ministry.

The collection also includes microfilm played by the late 50's to 1989, and approximately 30.000 colour slides of miniatures, once kept by the Central Institute for the Pathology of the Book.

The original negatives (master) constitute the archive of security and are stored in a particular warehouse , while the duplicates could be read in the consultation room, and it's possible duplicating or photocopying them with the only aim of study ; for other publications should be asked the authorization from the library.

Microfilmed manuscripts amount to 105.000 about.

The topographical card catalog of all these materials is available to the public, sorted by city, libraries and manuscript collections.

A project for the computerization of the catalog is in progress.

The material cannot be borrowed.

Opening hours to the public:
Monday - Saturday 8.30 a.m. -1.30 p.m.

The catalog of microfilm is available on-line
