Falqui Collection

The personal library of the literary critic Enrico Falqui (1901 - 1974) was purchased in 1976 and it was subsequently opened to the public in 1982. It contained a reserved room that had his name.

The book collection, made up of over 33.000 volumes, constitutes a systematic documentation in the modern literature area. It becomes really precious thanks to the presence of several first and rare editions, artist books, volumes with dedications and autographs of the artists and the very rich collection of over 500 newspapers of 20th century. Some of them are rare, such as the early works and magazines.

The reading room contains about 18.000 volumes subdivided in 8 different sections. The most important to remember are the following ones:

  • Section III of the Italian 20th century where the contemporary authors' opuses are documented in all editions. The scholars can make use of several newspapers, periodicals and off-prints concerning interviews, reviews, critical profiles at over than 720 Italian authors;
  • Sections III.a and VIII of artist books and rare and valuable books;
  • Sections IV, V and VI of literary stories, anthology and Italian and foreign literary essays;
  • Section VII of foreign literatures;
  • Section of miscellany made up of poetries plaquettes and small-size books collection;
  • Section of minor material containing catalogues of exhibitions, meetings, literary prizes programmes and editorial catalogues;

About 14.000 volumes are preserved in the storeroom that is supplied to the author libraries. These volumes must absolutely be requested at Falqui Room and they cannot be photocopied.

A conspicuous number of documents strictly bound to the library and registered as "Archivio Falqui" was found and now it is contained in the manuscripts and rare editions storeroom.

The room also offers a significant core of the Mario Petrucciani Library, with particular reference to the Italian poetry section (1970 - 2000).

With room computers, it is possible to page to a selected choice of institutes' web-sites and Italian libraries that are specialized in preservation and documentation of contemporary Italian literature.

This room belongs to a wide area which is specialized in linguistics and modern literature area. It grants a shared management of bibliographical instruments, repertories and reference service.

Furthermore, in this room can be consulted all the other special collections of the Italian twenty-century such as Astaldi, Thilger and Scalero.
